University of Porto brings close Portugal and Macau

The University of Porto was present in the Higher Education and Careers Exposition 2016, held in Macau, between 28 and 30 October 2016. The U.Porto was represented by Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Culture of the University of Porto, Professor Maria de Fátima Marinho, as well as by Professor Amelia Polónia, from the Faculty of Arts, and also one colleague of the International Relations Office, Estefânia Lopes.




This event, held by the Access to Higher Education Office (GAES) of Macau, allowed to establish direct contact with the student audience, present the educational programmes of the University of Porto and eventual recruitment of Macanese and Pan-Pearl River Delta public. The event counted on with the presence of 80 exhibitors from all over the world.

Portugal/U.S. Exchange Training Program for Higher Education International Relations Officers

U.Porto has participated in a training program sponsored by the Fulbright Commission Portugal, after the approval of the application of Lisa Dequech, colleague of the International Relations Office, who participated, under the Portugal/U.S. Exchange Training Program for Higher Education International Relations Officers, on a study visit to Washington DC, between 17 and 22 July 2016.

This joint initiative of the Fulbright Commission and the US Embassy in Portugal, was attended by 10 representatives of Portuguese higher education institutions. During 5 days, they were in Washington DC and made contact with US higher education institutions, both private and public, participated in meetings in the US Department of State and in the American Council on Education, and also received training on the US higher education at the American University. The group was also welcomed by the Embassy of Portugal in Washington DC.

Both the visit and the online sessions, jointly prepared with representatives from the American University, that took place during the months of April, May and June, had as main objective to help the Portuguese higher education institutions to expand their knowledge about the US education system and identify potential partners in order to increase the number of American students who choose Portugal as a study destination and vice versa.

         

The last phase of this programme took place between 24 and 27 October, in which evaluation meetings were held between representatives of the American University and representatives of the selected Portuguese institutions, in order to evaluate and support joint initiatives between Portuguese and US institutions.

Fourth Arab-Euro Conference on Higher Education: Research for sustainable societies – the role of universities
April 24-26, 2017

AECHE 4 will focus on bi-regional research collaboration and capacity building between Arab and European universities in the fields of energy, water, food and environment. The conference will be preceded by a related workshop on doctoral education on 24 April.

The event will gather representatives from the higher education community, in particular university and research leadership, policy makers and innovative industries. It is expected that the conference will produce recommendations for the Conference of Euro-Mediterranean Research Ministers, which takes place on 3-4 May 2017 in Malta. 

The conference will provide ample opportunities for exchange and networking with colleagues from all over the Arab world.

During the month of October, the U.Porto host four colleagues from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, on staff mobility in different services of the Rectorate:

  • Renata Prates, October 10 to 14, in the Legal Service;
  • Mariana Simoes, October 17 to 27, Public Relations Department;
  • Cristina Otsuka, October 19 to 23, in the Functional Centre University of Porto Digital (UPDigital);
  • Adriano Paganotto, October 19 to 23, in the Functional Centre University of Porto Digital (UPDigital).

All were unanimous in the opinion that this type of mobility strengthens the institutional ties between the two universities which already have a long-lasting cooperation.

Mundus & MOBILE+ Staff Visits

During the next month of November 2016, we will receive 18 administrative staff, selected under MOBILE+ Project, who will participate in the International Week organized by the International Office of U.Porto from 7 to 11 November.

At the same time, we will receive 5 administrative staff, under the Erasmus Mundus programme, that will do a mobility period in the International Office during the month of November and will also participate in the International Week.

Some of the countries that will be represented at the event are as diverse as Uzbekistan, Canada, Jordan, Taiwan, South Africa, Honduras, Vietnam, Libya or Mongolia.

Workshop in the field of International Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action

Workshop organized by the UNICAH Project consortium for students and future professional in the field of International Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action with a special focus on Africa. The SGroup Network as partner institution in this EU-funded initiative has 15 places available for students from member universities who can take part in a 5-day introductory training with travel and accommodation cost funded by the project.
 
The workshop will be held between 28th November and 3rd December 2016 at the University of Pavia. The participants will learn skills and competences necessary to perform a change-making process aiming at more inclusive, respectful and fair global society.

Director of the International Relations Office of Sejong University, South Korea

On October 19th, the International Relations Office welcomed Dr. Seungbin MOON, Director of the International Relations Office of Sejong University, South Korea, under the agreement signed in April of this year. 

During the meeting, information on both Universities were exchanged and also important details about the implementation of the foreseen activities were discussed, in particular in regards to the promotion of the mobility of students. Sejong University presented special conditions for U.Porto students on mobility at South Korea.

Syrian student receives award for best curricular performance

The Institute of public health of the University of Porto (ISPUP), welcomed on 17 October the new students of the postgraduate programmes in public health and health education, with an opening session of the new academic year 2016/2017.

During this session, the students with best curricular performance of the masters and Doctorate in public health from the Institute, in the academic year 2013-2014: Sausan Al Hamwi and Teresa Monjardino, respectively, were awarded a prize and had the opportunity to give a testimonial to the new students.

The Syrian student Sausan Al Hamwi, is a U.Porto Scholarship holder enrolled in the Master programme in the framework of the Global Platform 4 Syrian Students, a programme with financial and institutional support of the University of Porto.

The Platform past and future work was presented during the Session and Sausan and  the presents have also received a message of congratulations from Dr. Jorge Sampaio, former President of the Republic of Portugal and President of the Global Platform.

The Prize consists of funding for studies/research and is awarded by R&D unit of FCT (refªUID/DTP/04750/2013) of ISPUP-EPIUnit.
